It's different for everyone. For me, it was Cymbalta 90mg, Zyprexa 10mg, and Ativan PRN. I've heard a lot of people are successful on Lexapro, Luvox, and Zoloft, though. You might have to try a few different combos before you find the right one. Best of luck.

Everyone is different. I myself took Effexor, but in the past I've also had success with Prozac and Zoloft. You need to keep at it with your doctor until you find the best for you. And get into CBT treatment as well.

a combo of zoloft and anafranil made me totally unsymptomatic with ocd and depression. don't ask me why I stopped them (dumb, dumb). Now I try to take either one and get very ill and messed.

Effexor has a terrible withdrawal syndrome, Luvox a high side effect profile. Celexa helped me some and was a terrific antidepressant.

Benzos are trouble.

To be honest though, I wish I had simply walked into cbt when first diagnosed and averted the drug yoyo-ing completely. It intensified my depression. Now they are suggesting ERP after their drugs no longer cure. Why wasn't this their first suggestion?

Beth-

You are right about a lot of what you wrote, i can tell you have been dealing with ocd. Benzos are bad! They basically want you to try everything before they try ERP. I guess for legalities. I was on luvox and it worked the first time termendously, then second time not at all, weird. Ive found that you cant get off the anti's cause it will just come back.

Best of luck, literally

You absolutely can come off antidepressants Matt. Try looking at the positive side of this and know that the reason you have struggled is because, whilst you were on medication, you have not given yourself a chance to build up a proper tolerance to the unpleasant distressing symptoms that come with intrusive thoughts . I too struggled after being on medication. I went back on them. That was a mistake.

I got myself recovered after starting from scratch without medication. I experienced horrendous distressing symptoms whilst exposing myself to my fears, but in time, the body learns and trusts that there is nothing to fear. Life is full of events and trials that produce distressing symptoms. People often relapse because they haven't built a strong foundation for themseves. The more hell you can go through (exposure therapy) the better you will come out of it. Medication gets in the way of letting you experience the vital distressing symptoms that is required for you to learn from and thus be able to recover. People I think clearly underestimate how much distress you have to go through to recover from ocd. I did.

Seroquel 25mg and Lexapro 30mg works for for me. I'm a believer in Medication and CBT/ACT. The meds can help you get to a state where the CBT etc can sink in. All the studies show that this is best approach. Its different for everyone tho.
